Melasma is a pigmentation disorder characterized by darkening or areas of the skin.  It occurs primarily on the face but may also occur in the thoracic region (abdomen and chest) neck and on the arms. It is more frequent in women occurring only about ten percent of the time in men. The discoloration is termed Chloasma when it occurs during pregnancy. Melasma occurs as the result of an increase in the skin pigment called Melanin. Clinically speaking melasma is distinguished by reddish-brown discoloration,  which  may be symmetrical (on both sides of the face) and is not accompanied by other symptoms. It should be considered a chronic disorder, requiring continuous treatment and prevention.  However, there are cases in which the melasma disappears with adequate treatment and follow-up. The wine-extract formula should be prepared with white wine according to the accompanying instructions and taken three times per day. Its effect  when used with the ointment is to lighten the darkened areas and protect the skin against further deterioration (i.e: skin cancer).
